Diseño de condensadores y resistencias de amortiguación RC para inversores UV
A 30 A turn-off held to 5 kV/µs at 400 V needs 6 nF, which stores 0.48 mJ and burns 144 W at 300 kHz; a 10 nF part wastes 240 W, or 2.4% of a 10 kW rating. Damping 100 nH of loop inductance sets R above 8.2 Ω, and a part below 5 nH keeps the snubber resistive at 6.5 MHz.

Size the snubber capacitor from the turn-off current, then pick the resistor from the damping condition. A 30 A turn-off at 400 V held to 5 kV/µs needs 6 nF, which stores 0.48 mJ and burns 144 W at 300 kHz. Use R ≥ 8.2 Ω for 100 nH of loop inductance and a non-inductive part below 5 nH.
- Plot the loss against the allowed dV/dt before choosing any part
- Set the capacitor from C_snub = I_off / (dV/dt) at the worst turn-off current
- Size the resistor for the discharge loss with 2× margin
- Keep the snubber loop area below 1 cm²
- Burn in for 100 h at full power and thermograph both parts

Every switch-off in a UV inverter pushes the energy stored in stray inductance somewhere, and an RC snubber sends it into a resistor instead of into the junction. This article works through the dV/dt limit, the stored energy, the loss at 300 kHz, the critical-damping condition and the resistor technology, then gives six steps that protect the switch without spending the efficiency.
1. Introducción
The switches in a UV curing inverter turn off in tens of nanoseconds. Each turn-off leaves the energy in the circuit stray inductance looking for a path.
If that energy discharges through the device, the voltage spike stresses the junction past its rating and the device fails. An RC snubber routes the energy into a resistor, where it becomes heat.
The network is a capacitor in series with a resistor, placed across the switch. It limits the voltage rise at turn-off and damps the ringing at turn-on.
At 100–500 kHz the snubber stops being an accessory. Its values set device reliability, emissions and efficiency at the same time, so the three choices have to be made together.
2. Mecanismo central
2.1 Voltage rise at turn-off
At turn-off the switch current commutates into the snubber capacitor, and the capacitor value sets the voltage slope:
dV/dt = I_off / C_snub
where dV/dt is the voltage slope at the switch terminals, I_off the current that commutates at turn-off, and C_snub the snubber capacitance.
A 30 A turn-off held to 5 kV/µs therefore needs 6 nF. The same 30 A into 3 nF doubles the slope to 10 kV/µs, which exceeds the rating of an IGBT module and sits inside the range of a SiC MOSFET.
2.2 Stored energy and the loss in the resistor
The capacitor charges to the bus voltage on every cycle and discharges on the next turn-on:
E_snub = 0.5 × C_snub × V_bus²
where E_snub is the energy absorbed per event and V_bus the bus voltage. At 400 V and 6 nF the store is 0.48 mJ.
Multiplied by the switching frequency, that energy becomes continuous loss in the snubber resistor:
P_snub = 0.5 × C_snub × V_bus² × f_sw
where P_snub is the dissipation in the resistor and f_sw the switching frequency. At 300 kHz the 6 nF part dissipates 144 W, and 288 W when the discharge path is counted as well.
Halving the capacitance halves the loss and doubles the voltage slope, so the capacitor value is the point where the device rating and the thermal allowance meet.
2.3 Damping at turn-on
The resistor damps the discharge of the capacitor into the switch. Critical damping sets a lower bound on its value:
R_snub ≥ 2 × √(L_stray / C_snub)
where R_snub is the snubber resistance, L_stray the inductance of the commutation loop, and C_snub the snubber capacitance.
For a 100 nH loop and a 6 nF capacitor the bound is 8.2 Ω. A larger value slows the voltage recovery and leaves more energy in the capacitor at the next turn-off, so the useful range is narrow.
Without the snubber the same loop rings at the resonant frequency:
f_ring = 1 / (2π √(L_stray × C_snub))
where f_ring is the ring frequency. For 100 nH and 6 nF it lands at 6.5 MHz, inside the band the snubber resistor is expected to damp.
2.4 Resistor technology at switching frequency
A wirewound resistor carries 50–200 nH of series inductance. That inductance resonates with the snubber capacitor in the 5–20 MHz band, so the network rings instead of damping.
A thick-film or planar part holds 1–5 nH and stays resistive across the switching harmonics. With a 6 nF capacitor, loop inductance below 4.7 nH puts the snubber resonance above 30 MHz.
Fig. 1 — Snubber loss falls as the allowed dV/dt rises: 6 nF holds a 30 A turn-off to 5 kV/µs and burns 144 W, while the ignition transient doubles the current and the loss.
3. Puntos débiles de la ingeniería
Pain Point 1: Efficiency taken by over-snubbing
A designer who wants certainty fits a 10 nF capacitor. At 400 V and 300 kHz that part dissipates 240 W, which is 2.4% of a 10 kW inverter rating.
The loss arrives as heat in a cabinet that was already at its limit, and it buys a voltage slope far slower than the device requires.
Pain Point 2: Device failure from under-snubbing
A capacitor sized for the average turn-off current fails at the peak. During ignition-coupled transients the turn-off current doubles, the voltage slope doubles with it, and the spike exceeds the device rating.
The failure is intermittent, it appears at unrelated operating points, and the investigation usually blames the switch, and the snubber value goes unexamined.
Pain Point 3: Inductive snubber resistors
A wirewound part with 100 nH creates a local resonance with the snubber capacitor at 10 MHz. The network radiates and injects current into the gate drive.
The added fault is the one the snubber was fitted to cure, and it appears only at the switching harmonics, so a low-frequency check misses it.
Pain Point 4: Capacitor aging under pulse stress
The snubber capacitor absorbs and releases its store 300,000 times per second. A part with a marginal PD margin or a high tanδ heats and erodes.
After months the capacitance has drifted, the voltage slope has drifted past the device rating, and the failure arrives with no earlier sign.
4. Pasos del diseño
Strategy 1: Compute the loss surface before choosing parts
Plot P_snub = 0.5 × C_snub × V_bus² × f_sw against dV/dt = I_off / C_snub for the real turn-off current, and read the point where the voltage slope meets the device rating.
For 400 V, 300 kHz and 30 A that point is 144 W at 5 kV/µs. Allowing 10 kV/µs halves both the capacitance and the loss.
Strategy 2: Use Class I capacitors in the snubber
Dieléctrico de clase I with tanδ below 0.1% keeps the dissipation in the intended 0.5 × C × V² × f term instead of the dielectric, and its ±30 ppm/°C coefficient holds the voltage slope steady from a cold start to full-load temperature.
Low-ESL packages keep the snubber loop short, which matters more than the nominal capacitance at 300 kHz.
Strategy 3: Select a non-inductive resistor
Especifique un resistencia de película gruesa with inductance below 5 nH, rated for the full snubber loss with 2× margin, and verify its response on the oscilloscope at the working frequency.
Where the resistor sits in series with the high-voltage path, a planar construction keeps the loop area small and the parasitic capacitance low.
Strategy 4: Treat the layout as part of the design
Place the resistor and capacitor directly across the switch terminals with a loop area below 1 cm², and measure the loop inductance before the board is released.
Confirm that the snubber assembly resonates above 30 MHz. A condensador de película in parallel with the snubber covers the higher harmonics where the ceramic package inductance starts to dominate.
Strategy 5: Verify partial discharge at the snubber site
Require PD below 5 pC at 1.2× rated voltage, so 300 kHz energy cycling does not erode the dielectric inside the design life.
Where the snubber shares a board with the rectifier stage, check the diodo de recuperación rápida snubber too, because the two networks interact through the commutation loop.
Strategy 6: Validate by thermal imaging and burn-in
Run the inverter at full power for 100 hours, then thermograph the snubber resistor and capacitor.
Confirm the resistor hot spot stays inside its rating with the fan at its worst-case speed, and that the capacitor case temperature rise matches the 0.5 × C × V² × f calculation.

5. HVC N4700 capacitors for snubber duty
Three requirements drive the choice at this node: loss that stays in the resistor instead of the dielectric, capacitance that does not move with temperature, and a PD margin that survives 300,000 energy cycles per second. HVC builds Class I parts for that set, from a 6,000 m² owned factory in Dongguan, across 1 kV to 100 kV.
Seis parámetros que importan aquí
- N4700 Class I dielectric with tanδ below 0.1% adds negligible loss of its own, so the snubber dissipation lands in the resistor where the thermal design expects it.
- A ±30 ppm/°C temperature coefficient keeps the snubber capacitance constant, so the turn-off voltage slope at a cold start equals the slope at full-load temperature.
- Disc and 441 screw-type constructions with short internal paths keep the snubber loop inductance low, which preserves the damping through 100–500 kHz.
- PD below 5 pC at 1.2× rated voltage is guaranteed per part, so cycling at 300 kHz does not erode the dielectric into an unexpected short.
- A 1–100 kV range covers the low-voltage inverter snubber and the high-voltage trigger and ballast snubbers from one qualified family. condensadores pomo de la puerta take the high-voltage sites.
- HVC's 40 kV / 441 screw-type capacitor replaced a first-tier international brand in field-service programmes where every snubber watt is an efficiency point. The range matches the parameters of Vishay y componentes de alto voltaje de TDK.

6. Preguntas frecuentes
P1: ¿Cómo dimensiono el condensador de amortiguación?
From the voltage slope you can tolerate: C_snub = I_off / (dV/dt). A 30 A turn-off held to 5 kV/µs needs 6 nF. Use the worst turn-off current, which during ignition transients can be twice the nominal value.
Q2: How much power does the snubber waste?
From P_snub = 0.5 × C_snub × V_bus² × f_sw. At 400 V, 6 nF and 300 kHz that is 144 W, and 288 W if the discharge path is included. A 10 nF part reaches 240 W, which is 2.4% of a 10 kW rating.
Q3: What value should the snubber resistor be?
Start from R_snub ≥ 2 × √(L_stray / C_snub). For 100 nH and 6 nF the bound is 8.2 Ω. Going much higher slows the recovery, so stay near the bound and confirm the damping on the bench at full switching frequency.
Q4: Why is a wirewound resistor wrong here?
Because 50–200 nH of winding inductance resonates with the snubber capacitor in the 5–20 MHz band and rings at 10 MHz with a 100 nH part. A thick-film or planar resistor at 1–5 nH stays resistive where the damping is needed.
Q5: How small does the snubber loop have to be?
Keep the enclosed area below 1 cm² and the inductance below 4.7 nH for a 6 nF part, which puts the snubber resonance above 30 MHz. A snubber connected through 20 mm of trace adds more inductance than it removes.
Q6: How do I qualify a snubber capacitor for 300 kHz cycling?
Require PD below 5 pC at 1.2× rated voltage, tanδ below 0.1%, and capacitance stable over the cabinet temperature range. Then run 100 hours at full power and thermograph the part to confirm the loss matches the calculation.
