Heat couples between parts, so treat neighbor heating as a design input. An 8 W MOSFET on a 2–3 °C/W board path lifts the neighboring DC-link capacitor 16–24 °C, and every 10 °C halves its life. Build the thermal-resistance matrix, cap neighbor-induced coupling at 10 °C, specify Class I parts with tanδ at or below 0.1 %, and derate at the coupled worst-mode temperature.
- Build the thermal-resistance matrix R_th_ij at schematic stage
- Cap neighbor-induced coupling at 10 °C on every capacitor
- Specify N4700 Class I parts with tanδ at or below 0.1 %
- Map temperatures at idle, burst marking and full galvo speed
- Derate from the co-modeled worst-mode temperature, not cabinet air
Compendio
A compact laser power module packs switching devices, magnetics and high-voltage capacitors onto one board. Each part sits in the heat of its neighbors. This article gives the coupled network model, the 10 °C step that halves capacitor life, four interaction failures from field returns, six co-modeling steps, and the derating rule that uses the coupled worst-mode temperature.
1. Introducción
A laser marking supply runs a switching stage, a Q-switch driver and a galvo bus on one board. Every part dumps heat into the same copper, the same enclosure air and the same fans.
Capacitors are not the largest heat sources, because the MOSFETs and the diodes are. They are the parts most sensitive to heat, and each 10 °C of extra body temperature halves their life.
The failure that follows is hard to trace. The part that opens sits next to the part that someone optimized, and a thermal image shows the coupling only after the fact.
This article gives the coupled network model, the life arithmetic, four interaction failures from field returns, and six steps that hold every capacitor inside its thermal band in every operating mode.
2. Mecanismo central
2.1 The coupled thermal network
Each part is a thermal node. Its temperature equals its own dissipation plus the dissipation of every other node, each weighted by a coupling resistance.
T_i = T_ambient + ∑_j (P_j × R_th_ij)
where T_i is the temperature of node i, T_ambient is the surrounding air temperature, P_j is the dissipation of node j, and R_th_ij is the thermal resistance that links node j to node i.
2.2 Coupling resistance through board, wall and air
Coupling runs through the board copper, the enclosure wall and the air. A typical board path in a compact module transfers 2–3 °C/W, and a tightly packed module reaches 10 °C/W.
R_th_ij = ΔT_i / P_j
where R_th_ij is the coupling resistance in °C/W, ΔT_i is the temperature rise at node i, and P_j is the dissipated power at node j. An 8 W MOSFET on a 2–3 °C/W path adds 16–24 °C to the capacitor beside it. A part rated 105 °C then sits at 125 °C before its own ripple loss counts.
2.3 The capacitor's own loss term
Ripple current through the equivalent series resistance heats the capacitor from the inside, and that heat lands in the same network.
P_loss = I_rms² × ESR
where P_loss is the capacitor's own dissipation in watts, I_rms is the root-mean-square ripple current in amperes, and ESR is the equivalent series resistance at the ripple frequency.
A Class II part with tanδ at 1.5 % burns watts in a ripple-heavy node. A Class I part with tanδ at or below 0.1 % cuts that term by 15×, so the capacitor stops heating its neighbors.
2.4 Life against the coupled temperature
Life follows an Arrhenius relation, so the coupled temperature enters the exponent.
Life(T) = Life(T_0) × exp[(E_a / k_B) × (1/T − 1/T_0)]
where Life(T) is the service life at absolute temperature T, Life(T_0) is the rated life at the reference temperature T_0, E_a is the activation energy, and k_B is the Boltzmann constant.
With E_a near 0.7 eV, each 10 °C doubles the aging rate. The 16–24 °C that an 8 W neighbor adds therefore costs 3–5× of the capacitor's life. Cutting 5 W of neighbor loss at a 10 °C/W coupling removes 50 °C and returns 32× of life.
Fig. 1 — Neighbor heat at 2–3 °C/W adds 16–24 °C to the capacitor, and each 10 °C of that coupled rise halves the service life.
3. Puntos débiles de la ingeniería
Pain Point 1: The capacitor that failed because its neighbor was fixed
An engineer added a heatsink to a hot MOSFET, and the re-routed heat raised the adjacent DC-link capacitor by 20 °C. That 20 °C cost 4× of the capacitor's life, and the capacitor failed first. The investigation blamed the capacitor until thermal imaging showed the coupling.
Pain Point 2: Idle-validated designs failing in burst marking
The thermal design was verified at idle and light duty. In burst marking the Q-switch driver joins the network, the local temperature near the high-voltage capacitors climbs 30 °C above the idle profile, and the case temperature passes the rating. The machine passes acceptance and fails in production.
Pain Point 3: Airflow shadows creating asymmetric aging
In a sealed cabinet the airflow reaches some parts and misses others. The shadowed capacitor runs 15 °C hotter than its twin in the flow, the two parts age at different rates, and the hotter one drifts first and changes the array balance.
Pain Point 4: Ripple self-heating compounding the coupled load
In a ripple-heavy position a high-loss capacitor adds its own heat to the neighbor-induced heat. The body runs hot, ESR rises with temperature in Class II parts, loss rises again, and the two terms feed each other past the rating. No single-part datasheet analysis predicts that.
4. Pasos del diseño
Strategy 1: Build the coupled network model at schematic stage
Write a thermal-resistance matrix R_th_ij for the module from the layout, the enclosure and the airflow assumptions. Compute every node temperature for every operating mode, and update the matrix at each layout revision.
Strategy 2: Cut the capacitor's own term with a low-loss dielectric
Especificar N4700 (T3M) Class I ceramic parts, a SrTiO3 dielectric with tanδ at or below 0.1 % and a temperature coefficient of ±30 ppm/°C. Self-heating drops 15× against a Class II part, so the capacitor becomes a passive node. A condensador de película con un factor de pérdida más alto lleva la misma ruta de retroalimentación.
Strategy 3: Break the conductive path with placement and airflow
Keep high-dissipation devices and their heatsinks away from temperature-sensitive capacitors. Add thermal barriers or board cutouts, route airflow over every sensitive part, and confirm by imaging that no coupling exceeds 10 °C.
Strategy 4: Validate every mode's hot spot
Measure the temperature map at idle, single-line marking, burst marking and maximum galvo speed. Confirm each part stays below its derated limit in its worst mode, because that mode owns the part's reliability.
Strategy 5: Trend the sensitive nodes
Fit NTC thermistors on the DC-link capacitors, the Q-switch driver and the galvo bus, and log the readings in the machine health record. A rising temperature at constant load points to a choked filter, a failing fan or a drifting device.
Strategy 6: Derate from the coupled temperature
Select capacitors and semiconductors with the co-modeled worst-mode temperature as the input, and apply the vendor derating curves at that temperature. A part chosen for 85 °C air that runs at 95 °C in burst mode carries no derating margin at all.

5. HVC capacitors for coupled thermal networks
Three properties set a capacitor's place in the network: the loss factor of the dielectric, the thermal resistance of the package, and the stability of both over temperature. HVC builds N4700 parts for all three.
Seis parámetros que importan aquí
- tanδ at or below 0.1 % at 1 kHz cuts the capacitor's own loss term 15× against a Class II part, so the node adds little heat to its neighbors.
- ±30 ppm/°C holds capacitance and loss flat from −40 °C to +125 °C, so the loss-temperature feedback loop cannot start.
- Disco, tubular y HVCT8G screw-type bodies offer low case-to-ambient resistance through wide contact areas and metal-tab terminations.
- PD below 5 pC at 1.2× rated voltage stops discharge erosion from consuming the thermal margin inside the dielectric.
- Voltage coverage from 1 kV to 100 kV holds one low-loss discipline across every capacitor position in the module.

6. Preguntas frecuentes
Q1: How much does a neighboring MOSFET heat a capacitor?
Multiply its dissipation by the coupling resistance. An 8 W MOSFET on a 2–3 °C/W board path adds 16–24 °C. At a worst-case 10 °C/W coupling the same part adds 80 °C, which is enough to fail the design on its own.
Q2: Why does 10 °C matter so much?
With an activation energy near 0.7 eV, each 10 °C doubles the aging rate. A 20 °C coupled rise costs 4× of the life, and the 50 °C saved by cutting 5 W of neighbor loss at 10 °C/W returns 32×.
Q3: Which capacitor position pays the most for coupling?
The DC-link and Q-switch positions, because both carry ripple current and both sit near the switch heatsink. Their own loss term adds to the neighbor term, and the two reinforce.
Q4: Why not simply derate from ambient?
Cabinet air reads 75 °C while the capacitor body sits at 95 °C. Derating from air understates the aging rate by 4×, because 20 °C is two doublings.
Q5: Does a low-loss dielectric help the neighbors?
Yes. Dropping tanδ from 1.5 % to 0.1 % removes 15× of the capacitor's self-heating, and that heat leaves the shared network. Every part beside it runs cooler.
Q6: How is a coupled design verified?
Image the board in each operating mode, log the capacitor body temperature for one hour at full load, and confirm the hottest mode stays at least 10 °C below the rating. Repeat after any layout change.
